Destructive Mountaintop Mining
Oppose the Destructive Practice of Mountaintop Removal Mining The destructive practice of mountaintop removal mining has damaged or destroyed approximately 1,200 miles of streams, destroyed forests on some 300 square miles of land, disrupted drinking water supplies, flooded communities, and destroyed wildlife habitat. Mining companies clearcut native forests and use explosives to blow off mountaintops to uncover seams of coal. To minimize waste disposal costs, they then dump millions of tons of the waste rock into the valleys below, permanently burying streams. Please tell your member of Congress to co-sponsor the Clean Water Protection Act (H.R. 2169). This issue affects our environment AND our health. I have seen many pictures and read of destroyed natural habitat/ecosystems and destroyed human habitat for several years due to mountaintop removal/coal mining. It is past time that it needs to stop. The damage cannot be undone. Mining companies must provide clean water to inhabitants of these areas. If they want to exploit the land for a profit, they must be willing to provide for the people that reside there. Water is a precious commodity that we cannot survive without as a species. We must protect our water supply. If the mining of coal isn't bad enough, the practice of mountain top strip mining is unconscionable. Norman Augustine stated that many of today's problems were yesterday's solutions and mountain top mining will definitely be one of tomorrow's serious problems.
