DISASTER ALERT -- Hurricane Ike Response
Animals at Risk in Ike's Terrible Aftermath Hurricane Ike may be over, but for many people -- and animals -- the struggle to survive in the harsh new landscape created by Ike's high winds and heavy flooding has just begun. Thank goodness you've finally come You can make a difference with a donation to American Humane! Please give what you can to help animals affected by disasters like Hurricane Ike. You'll be helping pets like the poor white dog American Humane's Red Star Animal Emergency ServicesTM team found yesterday lying in the road -- dehydrated, sunburned and in need of urgent care. Or the lost golden retriever, with a collar but no tags, discovered wandering on her own but eager for human contact. As soon as a member of our team whistled, this sweet dog joyfully ran over and squeezed up against her as if to say, "Thank goodness you've finally come!" Or the lonely dog left tethered for days in a backyard without enough clean drinking water. These animals have all received the care they so desperately needed because donors like you generously and swiftly took action to fund our emergency relief efforts. 'Field Assessments' Are Under Way to Determine Where Need Is Greatest At the invitation of the Texas State Animal Resource Team (TXSART) and the Texas Animal Health Commission, American Humane is currently conducting "field assessments" in the southeastern part of the state. This is a critical stage of emergency response work because it allows us to determine where animals are most in need and then deploy search-and-rescue teams in an organized manner that best addresses those needs. Our concern is that there are many other animals like the dogs we have already found -- stranded, dehydrated and running out of time.
