Does Birth Control Pills = Abortion???

Just when we think we've seen it all

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has drafted regulations that would undermine women's access to birth control.

Under the guise of clarifying existing federal laws that allow health professionals to refuse to provide abortion services, the HHS draft regulations redefine abortion to include commonly used, FDA-approved methods of contraception, such as birth control pills and IUDs.

This radical redefinition of abortion is at odds with widely accepted science and with the government's own definition -- that pregnancy begins with the implantation of a fertilized egg.

The draft regulations, in fact, threaten all women's access to contraception and severely limit the ability of health care providers to provide information and services to low-income women.

The draft regulations are also intended to trump existing state laws that protect women's access to reproductive health care by requiring health insurance plans that provide drug benefits to include coverage of contraception, by requiring hospitals to offer emergency contraception to rape survivors, and by requiring pharmacies to fill patients' valid medical prescriptions.

This is a shameful political ploy in the waning days of this Administration which could cause immeasurable harm to the 17 million women in need of publicly funded contraceptive services.

Ironically, if implemented, these regulations could increase the need for abortion by making it more difficult for women to access the contraceptive services they need.

Make your voice heard in telling HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt to abandon these dangerous and ill-conceived regulations -- email Secretary Leavitt today. Send letter from here

Thank You for sharing this. I was not aware of "contraceptives" being attacked. It is imperative that alternative birth control access is available for those who can not discipline theirselves to natural methods like abstinence or rhythm; however, the ultimate goal is to avoid unwanted conception that leads to abortion. Birth control that AVOIDS conception should not be classed with birth control that VOIDS conception (destroying fertilized eggs).

It's really not a "radical redefinition" at all. As soon as the sperm and ova unite, they become an independent living two celled organism which is neither a sperm nor ova. What is it? Is killing it an abortion? I don't know.

This is a very informative article that I intend to do further research on. Thanks for sharing this. Birth control is very important to keeping the population under control as well as helping to avoid unwanted pregnancies. There are enough children in the world that were not wanted by their parents! I agree with JazLive - birth control that avoids conception is not the same thing as birth control that voids conception!

I don't see anything wrong with abortion and a woman's right to choose should be fought for against the fascists who want to control others. A human egg, fertilised or not, is not a human being. Human births are way too high and unsustainable for the planet's resources. Only religious delusionals think 'all human life is sacred' and other self-serving nonsense. We are just another species of animal, some would say more intelligent than all others, but that could be debateable unless we control our species' ego and stop thinking we're so special.
