Don't Waive Environmental Laws
Last month, the Bush administration announced that it will waive environmental and land management laws along 470 miles of the U.S./Mexico border. Clean water, clean air, protections for endangered wildlife and habitat - all disregarded by this administration due to a controversial provision of the Real ID Act. We don't have to sacrifice our endangered wildlife to protect our national security. Border wall construction is set to begin next month - it's time for Congress to put an end to this extreme abuse of power. Amend the Real ID Act Please tell Congress to pass the Borderlands Conservation and Security Act to amend the Real ID Act and require our government to comply with all environmental laws in borderland communities. The precedents set by the Secure Fence Act and REAL ID were short-sighted and hampered the ability of local experts to implement security measures that would be more effective and low-impact in the border environment. This legislation will address these short-comings, mitigate damage to Federal lands, and improve border security by increasing coordination and planning between Department of Homeland Security, Federal Land Management agencies and local governments. HR 2593 - The Borderlands Conservation and Security Act of 2007 Protecting our Communities, Protecting our Environment, Protecting our Borders. The Borderlands Conservation and Security Act addresses the impacts that concern American citizens and provides flexibility for a border security approach, instead of mandating an unrealistic and harmful wall. Contributor's Note
Over a quarter of the U.S.-Mexico border lies within public lands that jaguars, ocelots, Sonoran pronghorns, burrowing owls and other imperiled species need to survive. In fact, the border patrol estimates that there are 39 species protected or proposed to be protected under the Endangered Species Act in the area near the Arizona-Mexico border alone.
