Elephants on the Auction Block
Next month the governing committee of one of the largest conservation agreements in the world could decide to allow a one-time sale of ivory from South Africa's stockpile to China, even though China is the largest consumer of illegal ivory in the world. More ivory on the market, legal or not, will only lead to more killing of elephants. Please speak up for elephants today: http://go.care2.com/e/52Tr/vexV/AlVvl Already the rising demand for ivory products by China and its trading partners is fueling an increase in elephant poaching in Central Africa. And despite its considerable efforts, China has been unable to control the illegal trade of ivory across its borders and within its country. This proposal will be considered in July at the 2008 meeting of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). This will only serve to increase the desire for more ivory. China and the U.S. have both shown this past year that they do not have adequate controls in place to assure safe or legal imports and exports. This could only be called exploitation of one of the world's most unique creatures. We can and should do better than this.
