How Insomnia Affected My Life
You learn some very interesting things when you lie awake all night. For instance, you learn you can compose a song to the rhythm of your husband's snoring. You realize that your pets are not sleeping either and are up to no good. You count your blinks -- 26 a minute. The dripping tap demonstrates the cruel effectiveness of Chinese water torture. There is no one awake in your whole neighborhood at three in the morning yet somehow there are always cars going by. You may be wondering how I came to collect all these interesting facts. It's simple. I have insomnia. Insomnia has become a regular part of my life. In my 20s I could sleep anytime, anywhere and I loved it. I miss quality sleep. I am not sure when it all changed. I found out just how much insomnia can affect your life. I dreaded bedtime, wondering all day if I would be able to sleep. I was cranky and I forgot what it felt like to be normal. At work I had trouble focusing and was generally not fun to be around. I think my co-workers wanted me to solve my insomnia problem as much as I did. I began to gain weight from munching on snacks at night. And my husband's expectations of romance were met with irritability. I could barely function and I was not enjoying my life. I was too tired to exercise, even though I heard exercise was a great way to combat insomnia. Before I found a treatment that worked, every evening was an unwanted visit to the unknown happenings of the night. I discovered that there is nothing on TV late at night except infomercials. I have to say, when you are that tired, some of those products sound really cool. As I would watch the latest cleaning product demonstrated, it only reminded me that I was too tired to keep up with my housework.
