Is Zoloft Commercial Accurate?
Your mom, always taking an opportunity to brag about you, tells everyone you’re studying to be a neurosurgeon. You tell her it’s not quite like that…it’s just one class, but she goes on anyway. She boasts that you might be the one to create the next new drug like Zoloft, and those cute commercials. You say, “I hope I do a little better than they did when they made those commercials. They’re wrong!”. You Then Explain: The Zoloft drug commercials are not completely accurate because in the visualization they display you notice that there’s two nerve cells. The job of these nerve cells is that they want to communicate with one another but they are having trouble doing this because one of the messengers that help them communicate is off this messenger is called Serotonin. To relay messages to one another is important in our brain because this is where our thinking occurs. Serotonin is an important messenger involved in many bodily functions, such as sleep, pain, and mood behaviors. For our bodies to function properly, the right amount of Serotonin must be transferred from one brain cell to another. Lack of serotonin in certain parts of the brain can lead to serious depression. Depression can be treated by keeping the serotonin between cells for a longer period of time. Zoloft medicine is suppose to make sure that Serotonin stays longer between cells so that they can communicate better but in the commercial you see Zoloft medication going into one of the nerve cells when it doesn’t do that. What it does is it binds to one of the nerve cells and that’s how it blocks Serotonin from leaving the area between them and because of this the longer it says between them the more effect it will have on them. In our body one of those nerve cells released Serotonin but it doesn’t stay between the cells for very long because in our body we limit this by the nerve cell taking it back in. So Zoloft blocks this from occuring so that way Serotonin stays longer so that the nerve cells have the right amount needed to communicate more efficiently. So that’s why the Zoloft commercial is not completely accurate in how it displays how the drug actually functions in our brain.
