Product Safety Commission Under-Funded
Let Congress know that children across the U.S. -- deserve safe toys: For too long, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has been under-funded and understaffed. As the agency charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death, it's time that the CPSC get the new tools and resources it needs to help ensure that dangerous toys, cribs and other hazardous products do not wind up on store shelves and in our homes. Congress is conferencing on the final product safety bill. It is important that they ensure that the package sent to the President brings together the best elements of each product safety bill from the House and Senate. Please send a message to Congress to fight for the best safety standards possible. In families with more than one child, siblings wind up sharing toys, so a dangerous product intended only for a 12 year-old may still get into his seven year-old brother's hands. The final bill should recognize this reality. It seems pretty obvious: children should be able to play with toys that won't hurt them. Yet a million toys with lead paint, and millions with dangerous tiny magnets, have been pulled off the U.S. market since mid-December We need everyone and physicians to stand up and let our elected officials know what a threat toxic toys are to children's health.

Contributor's Note
Before you make those purchases remember to consider the safety and age-range of the toys. In 2007 alone, toymakers recalled over 19 million toys worldwide because of safety concerns such as lead paint and small magnets. In 2005, there were over 200,000 toy-related injuries. To prevent injuries, choose toys that are safe for the age of the child. Look for labels to help you judge which toys might not be safe, especially for infants and children under age three. For children of all ages, consider if the toys are suited to their skills and abilities. To learn more about toy safety, visit www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/toy_sfy.html.
