Puppy Mills Downright Horrific

We've all been tempted by the cute puppy in the pet store window. But before you give in to temptation and buy that furry bundle of joy, there are some things you should know.

For one, that puppy most likely came from a large-scale, substandard commercial breeding operation, more commonly known as a puppy mill.

Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and often unsanitary conditions, without adequate veterinary care, food, water and socialization. The breeding stocks at puppy mills (possibly your new puppy's mom and dad) are bred as often as possible in order to increase profits. In fact, the living conditions and treatment of these dogs can be downright horrific.

Read these news article resources:
Large puppy mill raided in Hickman Co. - Authorities in Hickman County have raided an apparent puppy mill, rescuing nearly 700 dogs. The animals were seized Wednesday from a 92-acre farm. Officers said dogs were crammed into cages and crates littered with feces and had little or no food and water.

Puppy mills face greater scrutiny - The 428 dogs — and the litters born almost daily in subsequent weeks — were extracted from a huge industry devoted to high-volume, low-cost puppy production.

Get informed about cruelty of puppy mills - The HSUS has been the leader in exposing puppy mills and working toward ending this cruel industry, which raises dogs under cruel and unhealthy conditions as a cash crop. Prior to the HSUS End Puppy Mills campaign, and HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle's appearance on the "Oprah" show, many people were unaware of the real cost of that cute puppy in the window. HSUS has spent many years and a great deal of resources to investigate puppy mills, and in some cases, prosecute the owners.

But with your help, we can stop puppy mills. The first step is being a responsible consumer and pet parent -- act today!

Please pledge to stop puppy mills by being a responsible consumer and pet parent. http://go.care2.com/e/6zAe/vSuf/AlVvl

All of my animals I got from the local humane society. Thus saving their lives.

I love all 13 of my pets. I would never think of abusing or putting them in harms way of an unsanitary environment. Puppy Mills need to be fined and closed down for the abuse those poor little animals get. I wonder how the people that run those puppy mills would feel if they were abused and had to live in unsanitary conditions.

Thank you for this intel. I had never heard about puppy mills. It is insane and ridiculous that people are actually breeding puppies (and kittens) considering the massive number of strays that are either rescued by people like you and me, or executed by the local authorities. I am usually not in favor of legislative solutions to problems, but in this case, a comprehensive ban would probably work best. I don't think it would be hard to achieve, either.
