Support A National Housing Trust Fund

The affordable housing crisis in America is reaching a dangerous tipping point. Something must be done immediately to ensure millions of Americans have safe and affordable housing. We need to support a senate bill to establish a National Housing Trust Fund that was introduced in December of 2007.

The Senate Bill

Legislation that would establish a National Housing Trust Fund is currently being negotiated between Representative Barney Frank (D-MA), the Chairman of the House Committee on Financial Services, and Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT), the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. The National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act of 2007, S. 2523, was introduced by Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) in December of 2007. There are currently 21 tri-partisan cosponsors, in addition to Kerry and Snowe, on the Senate bill.

Field Guide to Housing Trust Funds
Housing trust funds are distinct funds, usually established by state or local governments, that receive ongoing public revenues which can only be spent on affordable housing initiatives, including new construction, preservation of existing housing, emergency repairs, homeless shelters, housing-related services, and multifamily building for nonprofit organizations.

A national housing trust fund would:
- Be targeted to low-income households;
- Be flexible enough to meet local needs with both rental and ownership units;
- Be crafted to ensure compatibility with other federal housing programs; and
- Encourage responsible efficiency standards and green building principles.

To get this done, we need to put pressure on our senators. You can help by signing a petition for a noble and good cause. The petition for a national housing trust fund is here!

Thank you for working to end this crisis.

Comment:
Isn't it pretty disgraceful that we can sign over so much money to kill innocent people & maim our own to play 'soldier,' but we 'haven't' the money (like that with which the super rich have been gifted) to make sure our own poor & homeless have decent places to live. WHO creates all these Katrinas, floods, greed & disasters that ruin our land and our people's lives?
